Old Master Studies

These are some of the earliest drawings I made when I began my studies at Rhodes University. Having not taken Art as a subject in high school, I felt at a disadvantage and hoped that by studying (copying) the work of the Old Masters I would be able to catch up to my very talented class-mates. Looking back on it now, I cannot help but feel that although as a technical exercise it definitely helped me; as a conceptual stepping stone it held me back from certain freedoms. The main thing I took away from it in the end was the love of the human form and its representation, which is with me still today in all I do.
